St Killian’s College is celebrating this week after being awarded the highly prestigious Investors in People (IIP) accreditation. Investors in People provide a best practice people management standard, offering accreditation to organisations that adhere to the Investors in People framework. Currently only 16% of businesses in the UK have achieved the Investors in People Standard.

The award was given following a comprehensive audit by IIP assessors who evaluate the school’s performance and approach to its staff through a wide criterion of indicators, including how St Killian’s aligns people practices to the achievement of organisational success, how individuals contribute to this, and how the management team develops and leads all employees to achieve this. Almost half of the staff was randomly selected for interview, representing a cross-section of teaching, non-teaching support staff, cleaners, kitchen staff, grounds-men and members of the Board of Governors.

According to the awarding body, becoming accredited as an IIP employer shows that St Killian’s College management team is ambitious, forward thinking and people-focused, and that it ensures people are cared for and given opportunities to develop professionally.

The report highlighted the fact that the College staff have a clear vision for the future backed up with sound strategic planning to ensure the College operates efficiently in the 21st century.

The assessor reported, “The Senior Leadership Team’s approach to involving people in plans for the future has created a unified staff group and those interviewed clearly identified themselves as part of the St Killian’s staff team….

She commented on the fact that the College ethos was clearly evident, that the ‘Values were evident everywhere……. The ethos is alive and working and as a whole school team, people were willing to go the extra mile’.

The report concludes that St Killian’s acknowledges that in nurturing its most valuable resource – its staff – that this will have the greatest impact on the students, their experience in school and the outcomes they achieve in the future.

Principal, Mr Jonny Brady was delighted with the outcome of the assessment,

“This the first time we as a College have become involved with Investors in People and we are pleased to gain recognition at our first attempt! We can be very proud of this external recognition of the progress we have made in our people management standards in the four years since St Killian’s College was established. This comes on the back of an excellent general Inspection two years ago. Both professional bodies have evaluated how the College operates from both a managerial/staff perspective and from an educational perceptive, and once again we have come out with flying colours.

“I am very happy and proud to lead such a talented and committed staff as we have in St Killian’s and I thank them all for the high standards they set and maintain in the College.

Mrs Bernie Haughey, who led the initiative, believes that the whole process has been beneficial for all involved.

“It is always gratifying when outsiders acknowledge and endorse the good work that is being done within the school by both teaching and non-teaching staff.

“There are many positive comments in the report. However we will be looking as much at the recommendations for improvement, as a College we are committed to creating the best possible environment where our students and staff can achieve their potential and therefore as part of this culture of continuous improvement the full review report will be used to ensure we continue to develop together as an organisation.”
