A Sports Taster day was held recently in Larne Leisure Centre, as part of the on-going programme of activities organised by the Larne Shared Education Partnership.
Over 60 pupils, from St. Killian’s College, Roddensvale School and Moyle Primary School got an introduction to Boccia, New Age Curling, Rugby and Hurling, in the spirit of togetherness.
Boccia was coached by Claire Taggart, Larne’s very own Paralympian. She shared her expertise and enthusiasm for the sport with the pupils, who quickly discovered it wasn’t as easy as it looked.
Colin Roden, Larne’s Sports Development Officer, took charge of the New Age Curling which proved to be hit for all students.
Gary Craig of Ulster Rugby provided a very engaging session of Tag Rugby.
Pupils were given the opportunity to learn the basics of hurling under the watchful eye of Tommy Lismore of St Killian’s PE Department and his Year 14 GAA coaches, Megan McKillop and Ana Ghio of Ruairi Og GAA club, Cushendall and Colla McDonnell of Shane O’Neills GAA club, Glenarm.
All agreed it was a superb day. The students enjoyed all the activities, learning many new skills and participated with great enthusiasm. They were able to form many friendships which will continue as the Shared Education Programme develops next year. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to all who were involved.
