St Killian’s student gains 3rd place in NI

It has just been announced that St Killian’s student Kathy Darragh has been awarded 3rd place in Chemistry in the NI A Level examinations taken in June.[singlepic id=40 w=320 h=240 float=right]

Kathy’s A* in Chemistry was complemented by 2 more A* – in Maths and Biology – and a Grade A in Spanish.

Kathy has just begun her university career, reading Environmental Studies in Cambridge.

St Killian’s Principal Mr Jonny Brady was delighted with the award.

“I congratulate Kathy on this outstanding achievement.  Kathy is a credit to herself, her family and her school and thoroughly deserves this high accolade.  She was a very committed student and, with the help of her teachers, she certainly reached her potential during her time with us in St Killian’s.  I wish her every success in Higher Education studies in Cambridge.”

Students at St Killian’s College, Garron Tower, continue to shine brightly

Following last week’s superb A level results the GCSE students at St Killian’s have proven that the future of education in the Glens and East Antrim is very bright with excellent exam results across the board.  This year there was a number of top performers including, Catherine Burns who achieved 10 A*s, Roisin O’Kane (5A*s and 6As), Shannon McLoughlin (6A*s and 4As), Tanya Austin (7A*s and 3 As), Claire Diamond (4A*s and 6As), Aine McDonnell (6A*s and 4 As) Hannah McIlwaine (5A*s and 5As) and Lauren O’Boyle (5A*s and 5As). Of the students who sat their exams in June 86% achieved 5 A*-C grades while 81% gained 7 A*-C or better.  Over 1/3rd of our GCSE grades were A*-A, a significant rise of 8% on last year.

One of the success stories of St Killian’s was the continuation of the college mentoring system which supports students to reach their full potential at all levels of the ability range.  These students, without exception, outperformed their predicted GCSE grades and a number gained an extra 3 or 4 A*-C grades.  All of our students, teachers and parents should be rightly proud of the tremendous set of results that have been achieved.

Principal Mr Jonny Brady expressed his delight with another notable set of results at St Killian’s.

“Given the continuing emphasis on numeracy and literacy the college results in Mathematics and English continue to be strong and enjoyed pass rates which are higher than the NI average”.

St Killian’s Students continue to achieve academically

[singlepic id=35 w=320 h=240  float=left]The staff and students at St Killian’s College have once again succeeded in producing an excellent set of A Level results which will ensure that the college’s reputation continues to go from strength to strength. This marked the first full year where all of the students were on the one campus and resulted in 87% attaining A*-C grades with 70% achieving A*-C in three or more subjects. This was crowned by a number of significant firsts; the college saw the percentage of our students, who achieved A* increase to 22%, with 14% achieving 3 straight A’s or better. Indeed, one of the most momentous achievements this year is the fact that the college celebrated the success of two of its top achievers.  Kathy Darragh has been offered a place in Cambridge to read Environmental Studies while Jacob Armstrong will be taking up a place at Oxford to read Mathematics.  No doubt that these two trail blazers will be followed by more of our students who aspire to reach these academic heights.

Other significant results were achieved in the STEM area, where 75% of our students attained A*- B grades in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Technology and Design. However, equally gratifying is the fact that two new subjects made their mark in the school curriculum for the first time, Construction where 100% of students achieved A*-C and in Engineering where 50% of all students entered achieved an A*-A. This, the college believes, underscores its ability to deliver to a wide variety of educational interests and talents among our student body.

All of this success reflects both a hard working staff and group of students who are determined to succeed in all facets of school life.  Not surprisingly these superb results ensured that most of our students have secured their first choice place across a variety of courses at universities. This is especially pleasing given the current economic climate and competition for university places.
