St Killian’s into BT Faul Cup Final

St Killian’s Garron Tower are through to their first ever BT Faul Cup final after beating Lismore Comprehensive last Friday evening in Greenlough.

Lumen Christi had qualified for the final a week earlier defeating the holders Aquinas Grammar in the quarter-finals and then Glen Road CBS in the semi-final.

Field work courses and work experience had delayed this game but it opened at a blistering pace with Lismore breaking on their right wing and Niall Kerr’s angled lob for a point dipping into the net.

St Killian’s though responded immediately and Cushendall hurler Christy McNaughton buried a fourth minute goal to put them back on an even keel.

After that it was a case of holding the opposition and edging forward to pick off points.  Defender Brendan Lynas fired over one on the overlap, while Jack Martin claimed the rest of the first half scores to help the east Antrim outfit establish a 1-4 to 1-1 interval lead.

Lismore came more into the frame during the second half – Niall Kerr shooting three fine points.  But St Killian’s worked hard in all departments, their disciplined tackling breaking up the Armagh side’s attacks time and again.

Goals from Stephen Hamill and Ryan McIlroy clinched victory for St Killian’s with Jack Martin guiding over a point late in the game.

St Killian’s achievement is put into context in that less than half of the side have experience of club football – and that being with only one club, Glenravel.

The rest are newcomers to the game and of those Stephen Walsh, Liam Young, Hugh McNeill, Paddy Burke and Colin Hayden showed up well.

However it would be amiss to mention the significant contribution of the strong running Sean McCann and Ryan McIlroy in attack as well as the skilful play of Carnlough pair Jack Martin and Stephen Hamill.
