Congratulations to St Killian’s College on receiving a significant investment of up to £4 million from the Department of Education to carry out major refurbishment.
The project will provide a new three storey teaching block, a state of the art sports hall and fitness suite and refurbish existing buildings. The announcement follows completion of a range of minor works which delivered £1.5 million of additional accommodation and improvements. This considerable investment acknowledges the success of St Killian’s to date and reflects priorities in both Area Based Planning and the emerging Post Primary Review landscape.
As the Education Minister noted, ‘…this investment underlines my continuing commitment to improving the schools estate. It comes in addition to the major works projects worth £350 million I have announced since last summer; in addition to the £31 million I have invested in minor works since January; and in addition to the £47 million I have earmarked for maintenance this year.’
This investment in St Killian’s will ensure that the already outstanding elements of the college, which was recognised and endorsed by the ETI in last November’s report on the college’s progress, will be further enhanced ensuring that the students who attend St Killian’s will continue to receive a top class education.
The plans for the £4 million project will include the refurbishment of the castle building as an administration block and a new three storey teaching block, on the footprint of St Mary’s dormitories will incorporate Technology and Design, Art, Drama and Music. Furthermore there will be a state of the art Sports Hall, a 3G pitch and Fitness Suite on the footprint of Dunmaul which will not only enhance the student’s experience of PE but will be opened up to and benefit the whole community.
Principal Jonny Brady said, ‘This is another great news story for St Killian’s. The development programme will ensure we provide our young people with the best possible educational facilities and experience within the budget available. This investment will undoubtedly make the college the most modern, stylish and fit for purpose school in the area’.
